Get started

Create an MCP server

Start a new server in Studio, from an API you already have or from a template.

There are three ways to start a new server with Studio. If you already have a REST API, Studio can turn its description into an MCP server for you. If you'd rather describe the app in plain words, Compose builds it from a conversation. And if you want to start from code, create a project with the CLI and open it in Studio.

All three produce an ordinary NitroStack project on your disk. You own the code, and you can keep working on it in your editor.

Generate a server from a REST API

Studio's app generator reads an API description and writes the server for you. It accepts a Swagger or OpenAPI document, by URL, or a Postman collection in format v2.0 or v2.1. It finds the endpoints, writes a typed tool for each one, and scaffolds a NitroStack project you can run straight away.

Open the project menu

In the project card at the top of the sidebar, choose Add / Manage Projects, then choose to generate a new app.

Point Studio at your API

Paste the URL of the OpenAPI or Swagger document, or import the Postman collection file.

Review the generated tools

Studio opens the new project. Check the generated tools on the Tools page, and give each a clear description: the AI model decides when to call a tool from its description alone.

Build it by describing it

Compose is an agent inside Studio that writes the server with you. Describe the app you want, its tools, and the widgets that show their results, and Compose builds the project, runs it, and tests it in a live chat as it goes.

Start from a template

Create the project with the CLI, then open it in Studio:

npx @nitrostack/cli init my-server --template typescript-starter
cd my-server
npm run dev

The Quickstart walks through this in full. To open the folder in Studio, see Add an MCP server.
